OR the “Civic Engagement 18” Academic Option
These Orientation sessions will introduce the Bruin Leaders Project for both students interested in the non-academic Certificate of Leadership option and those interested in enrolling in “Civic Engagement 18” for 1 unit of P/NP academic credit. Come and learn what this seminar-based ladership project sponsored by the Center for Student Programming has to offer you and how you can enhance your leadership skills through a combination of theory and practice. For those interested in the Academic option, course requirements will be covered and a PTE will be issued at the end of the session. Each session lasts approximately 20-30 minutes.
Note: Civic Engagement 18 Option only available Winter and Spring Quarters.

"African American Leadership in the 21st Century" |

Explore the history of African American leadership when Dr. Nelson brings his book to life. Examine the rise of the leadership structure from 1920s to the 1950s, the critical days of the Civil Rights movement, the impact of Black radical movements, and developments up to the present day. Dr. Nelson will examine the role that African American leaders played in the 20th Century and compare those accomplishments to leaders in the 21st Century that have represented the African American community, including the impact of President Barack Obama’s campaign and historic election.

This experiential seminar will explore different aspects of public speaking. Participants will learn theories and techniques to deliver amazing speeches and then practice them. We will touch on various aspects of speech delivery including body language and speech content. No prior experience is necessary but participation by every individual is required. We operate under the premise that “it’s always better after your first time.”

In this workshop on ‘Controversy with Civility’, the sixth ‘C” in the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, participants will explore unique approaches to looking at potential sources of conflict and methods of resolving it with the co-founders of Diverse City Consulting. |

“Know Who You Are: Understanding Your Personality and Strengths” |

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is the most widely used and researched personality and strengths assessment. Among its many uses are career exploration by students, teamwork building in Fortune 500 companies, and communication building in Marriage and Family Counseling. By using this instrument, people become more self-aware of their preferences for gaining energy, understanding information, making decisions and approaching life. This is a wonderful test for emerging leaders to understand how they deal with others. |

In keeping with the Social Change Model, this introductory seminar will focus on helping
participants develop basic skills needed to foster collaborative relationships when conflict or controversy appears. This interactive seminar will involve an exploration of what conflict is, the sources of conflict and strategies that will help students develop effective and empowering means of resolving conflict and controversy. |
